Homemade Electrolyte Drink!
The weather may be trying to kill us, but we can support our bodies through this intense heat!
As someone who often needs electrolytes to function, I have tried many of the packets and pre-mades, and I’ll be honest… they all kinda suck in their own way. There is always at least 1 sus ingredient, and some of them are criminally expensive. So what do we do when the heat index is in the 100s, and there is the lettuce diarrhea going around? I make my own electrolyte drink! This blend will replace minerals lost to sweating and diarrhea. But it may not be enough. If you are unsure if this is safe for you, please consult your doctor.
An electrolyte drink can be as simple as adding a pinch of salt to filtered water, but that isn’t always enough. This is the one I make for us every day.
Into a Quart mason jar:
¾ teaspoon mineral salt (not the iodized white stuff. Get a good salt)
1 Tablespoon real maple syrup
1 cup Coconut Water
¼ cup (no added sugar) juice (I like the antioxidant juice from Aldi)
Juice from ½ lemon or lime
Top it off with filtered water.
Options:
If I have it, I add 1 tablet of Hyland's Bioplasma cell salts.
Make an herbal tea for part of your water component–bonus points if it is a mineral-rich herb such as oatstraw or nettles. Or an herb that is cooling in nature, such as elderflower, marshmallow, or hibiscus.
My last herbal infusion was: Hawthorn leaf, flower, & berry, hibiscus, rose petals, linden flower & bract, and oatstraw.
I am not a doctor; I am an herbalist. This is a delicious recipe for hydration, not medical advice.
