If you have purchased my Elderberry Syrup before you may notice a change in the ingredients. I have removed the echinacea tincture from the recipe because it is best used in the moment you feel like you're getting sick, to mount an immune response. This means, as soon as you feel that tickle in your throat or that familiar "off" feeling. Echinacea is not useful as a preventative. So who is? Both astragalus root and Reishi mushroom.
According to mycologist Paul Stamets, reishi mushrooms contain (among many constituents) a complex group of polysaccharides, specifically beta glucans, which are mild irritants to your immune system. This causes the immune system to stimulate the production of helper T cells which attack infected cells. Each time a response is mounted, it is like flexing your muscles. Over time, this means our immune system is facilitated and ready to respond. Reishi mushrooms have also been found to be cytotoxic to the growth of cancer cells and a potent anti-viral as well. What an amazing gift from the Earth!
Unfortunately, you can't just go to the market and grab some reishi to saute in your stir fry. Reishi is a tough & woody mushroom and tends to be a tad bitter. It is best consumed either as a slow brewed decoction(tea), in soups or as a double extraction. Like many medicinal mushrooms, reishi has a cell wall called a chitin layer that is tough to break. So, just drying them and grinding them to put into a capsule won't do the trick. I like the double extraction because it releases the full complement of healing properties from reishi both water and alcohol soluble. You get it all. Whole medicine for the whole person. Beautiful.
Astragalus Root is known in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) as effective at building "protective chi." It is an immunomodulator, building both specific and non specific immunity, and is know for its ability to both gentle an overactive immune response and boost a weakened one.
Alcohol-free formula has all the same great herbs and mushrooms without the alcohol. The reishi and elderflower that are added as tincture/extract in the original formula are included as part of the decoction. Without the alcohol, the formula will not be preserved as long.
